Before you shoot a load of money on a NEW part, I have a base and a base arm you can have. Free and in great shape. (Parts 1,2 and 24 on this page - http://www.shopsmith.com/service/mark/m ... s_list.htm I got it from someone on Ebay and it was included with some other stuff. I don't need it. Send me a PM with an address and I'll send it to you. All you will need to find is the tailstock.

Excellent. Thanks to everyone that contributed to the thread. All the advice was very helpful and a special thanks to Chris for his generosity!

The first task once I am up and functional is to re-make some Finials for the Grandfather Clock my father made 40 years ago.
The were broke when we moved the clock to Indiana. Gonna be fun!

re-assembled with the new parts. I noticed the new part is closed out and doesn't allow for tube to interface with the legs. Maybe I wasn't the only operator who has had issues with this kind of a problem.

It sounds like gunk in the tubes and I personally would go to the store and buy some PENETRATING OIL. I wouldn't use any other kind of oil. It will say penetrating oil on the outside. Let it sit for awhile - maybe a minute, maybe an hour, maybe overnight. It should slide out unless there is other damage (like hammer blows). Once it is out, you will need to clean everything up making sure the slides and holes are cleaned first with penetrating oil, cleaned with a rag, and (I suggest) a little beeswax. You can use a drop or two of oil as well but it tends to collect dust.

I had the same problem and now I have a routine: Tighten the roller-bar by turning it towards the headstock, loosen by turning it away from the headstock. This works for either end.

Not sure I'm following... What do you mean?

I think I understand. If you look at one of his original pictures, with the way tubes removed, you can see the legs of the tailstock, so the holes in the casting for the way tubes and the tailstock intersected or met. In the part you sent him (and I just checked mine is the same), those holes do not intersect.
