I'm not new to tools but I am to SS. I was told that the quill was upgraded to the two bearing model when I bought it. She's a sweet girl but maybe you can help me with a little curve she's just thrown me. Since I disassembled and reassembled the headstock for painting the machine develops a high pitched squeal a certain rpms at irregular -now you see it now you don't -intervals. Sounds like a harmonic of some kind. I'd say bearing noise except
1) it's not constant
2) nothing is getting hot
3) the new quill and bearings aren't very old.
4) a fairly small change in rpm gets rid of it.

Should I be worried?

The noise is very high piched, seems to be high in the headstock on the drive end, and really sounds and acts like a harmonic. Actually seems worst in the mid-low range. After checking out the threads you directed me to, I think I'll look at the belts. The poly v is worn a bit on the side closest to the rest of the headstock (right) like it has at some time run up against that side and the drive belt looks a little old. - Have to say though it's not a sound that I would have associated with a belt. - Tightness is correct but haven't tried dressing.
One thing I did notice is that if I run it with a saw blade on it is far less apparent. (no, not just hidden by the blade noise). If it's some kind of balance issue the blade may be acting as a flywheel to dampen it.

Hello all,
I picked up a 10E last week and yesterday a Greenie. The vent plate is missing and no other signs of a serial number. Are there any other distinguishing marks that can identify the age? The owner's manual has copyright date of 1954 but this doesn't mean much I guess... Seems complete and works fine! Got the jointer with it too! I am having lots of fun just cleaning and learning about these machines! I will set the 10E up as a lathe station and the Greenie for other purposes. I've always been interested in the ShopSmith but could never afford a new one. These oldies really are goodies! Thanks! Paul
