Don't forget 36 (515395) in the parts list for the 1" Platen. 37 is the 1/2" Platen (515397) and 38 is the 1/2 Curved Platen (515396) and all three are included with the Strip Sander. There is a fourth one called the Sharpening Plate (521881) that comes with the Chisel Sharpener.

That is the same PDF copy of the Strip Sander Manual I have which "I downloaded from somewhere, sometime" too. It apparently came from vintagemachinery.org site having the Date Code 727-93.

The fourth one comes with the Chisel Sharpener Attachment and is not listed or shown in the Strip Sander Manual. If you do much wood turning you may want to look into getting the Chisel Sharpener Attachment (see 1st link below). I prefer it over the Sharpening Guide and Sanding Disk (see 2nd link below). I have and have used both. Of course, anyone using replaceable Carbide Tip Lathe Chisels won't need either.

I have Qty. 2 of the Sharpening jig in the 2nd link.

So I will Calm down on trying to get the Chisel Sharpener.
I really do not like that setup configuration on the strip sander anyway.

The Sharpening jig has more Rigidity for making a Keen edge.

The Sharpening Guide is an easier guide to use for sharpening Lathe Chisels than the Strip Sander Sharpener. When using the Sharpening Guide with the 12" Sanding Disk (shown below) use caution not to overheat the Lathe Chisel tip. Make sure you are using it in a clear area as it throws out a lot of sparks.

In the Shopsmith picture above it is mounted to the Extension Table which is an optional way to mount it.

The first Sharpening Guide I purchased came in the original box and looked like it had never been used.
It also had the template to mount it to the extension table.

I found that the screw provided for the angled pivot point had quite a bit of slop/play in it.

I have some bushings I will install in them and use a shoulder bolt to replace the screw pointed out it the picture.

The screw you pointed out in the picture is a pivot point and should not be too tight. This allows you to move the Roundnose Chisel back and forth for sharpening.

I am guessing you also have the instructions. My instructions are 8 pages with 5 additional pages plus the template. I did not mount the Sharpening Guide to my extension Table on any of my Shopsmith's. I only used it on the Main Table. I did use a finer sandpaper than normally found for the 12" disk for finish sharpening. I attached a standard size large Sandpaper sheet and stayed within the circle area. Easily marked with a white or light colored crayon. One of the things I like about the Strip Sander with the Chisel Sharpener Attachment is sanding belts go down to a very fine grit.

I will try to remember to post pictures of this improvement.
I will set it up in the milling machine at work and ream the plastic to accept a bronze bushing.

This Sharping guide works somewhat similar to the sharpening of Machine Tools that we do at work.

I will use Qty. 2 McMaster Carr Part# 6391K131 Oil-Embedded Bronze Sleeve Bearing for 1/4" Shaft Diameter and 3/8" Housing ID, 1/4" Long.
The top one already has a bushing but it is very loose (Diameter wise) on the screw.
So I will drill and ream it out.
Then a shoulder bolt from work similar to this one below.
Part# 91259A53 Alloy Steel Shoulder Screw, 1/4" Shoulder Diameter, 5/8" Shoulder Length, 10-24 Thread.

I have a washer to shim it for minimal upward movement so it will rotate without moving (forward or backward).

Thanks for the tip about regular sandpaper on the disc.

I have several discs in my artillery that I can dedicate one to that purpose.

As I said before

I did not mount the Sharpening Guide to my extension Table on any of my Shopsmith's. I only used it on the Main Table.

There are advantages/disadvantages for either way of mounting it.

The previous picture shows it mounted on the Extension Table. Note the direction the Sanding Disk is turning relative to the Lathe Chisel. This has an advantage over the Sharpening Guide mounted on the Main Table which has the Lathe Chisel facing the opposite direction of the rotation of the Sanding Disk. It is relatively easy to gouge the sandpaper with the Sanding Disk rotating into the "point" of the lathe Chisel sharpening it on the Main Table unless you have a reversing motor like the Power Pro Headstock. Kind of the same reason you run the Strip Sander in reverse for Lathe Chisel Sharpening. It can be used on the Main Table without "gouging" the sandpaper with light pressure pushing the chisel in to sharpen. It should be done with light pressure which helps reduce heat buildup too.

Mounting the Sharpening Guide on the Extension Table requires drilling holes in the Table's top to mount it. On the Main Table it attaches in the Miter slot.

Having the Sharpening Guide mounted on the Extension Table has it in only one position relative to the Sanding Disk with the only adjustment being the height up or down of the Extension Table. On the Main Table you not only have the Table height adjustment but can move the Sharpening Guide back and forth in the Miter Slot.

Using the Extension Table, you can have the Sharpening Guide ready for quick sharpening jobs in the middle of a turning project by just sliding the Headstock over (for drive and Tailstock mounted turnings) or if doing bowl type turning the Headstock can be placed next to the Extension Table during turning. Using the main Table means removing the item being turned and the Lathe Tool Rest followed by mounting the Sanding Disk and inserting the Main Table. A much more involved process for Chisel Sharpening.

These advantages/disadvantages are in no particular order. They were just as I thought of them and may not list them all. Either way you use the Sharpening Guide it will give you nice sharp ready to use Lathe Chisels.

I got the new bearings on the Quill shaft and got the 2-piece shaft back together.


I marked the shaft and put it back in the same orientation. I got this set of Roll pin punches from Amazon.
