I put a new double pole switch in (thanks for the info. Ivan) Changed the polarity on the motor and put a 30' grounded cord on it (now I can plug it directly into an outlet instead of searching for an extension cord) The cord is grounded @ the switch and motor. Just have to finish up the little parts and then I will be moving on to Shopsmith #3, which is my 3rd ER. I am thinking of cutting the ways at about 30" and making a shortened Shopsmith that will be dedicated to the jigsaw, jointer, and turning bowls.

The motor condensor clears the headrest side by 1/4"

PLEASE do not cut the 10 e/r tubes!!!!!!!:eek: If you want to make a shorty out of a 10 e/r, get some mark5/v tubes and cut them! They have a thinner wall than the 10 e/r vintage. There are oodles of 5/v tubes, but fewer 10 e/r vintage. The thinner tubes are adequate for shorty/mini mods. Be aware that earlier Greenie/Goldie vintage(gilmer/3/4 motor) had 1 7/8" bench tubes(won't fit a 10 e/r. Newer goldies(1 1/8 hp motor/poly v) and gray model 5/v have 1 3/4" way and bench tubes. The bench tubes are 3/4" longer than the way tubes. Thought this info relevant to a 'used' tube search!

If necessary, depending on shipping costs, I might be willing to trade a pair of Mark V tubes for your ER tubes. Then you can cut away with no brow beating...

IF I were to make a shorty, it wouldn't be anytime soon as I need to focus on work for a while and won't have time to do any mods. in the near term.

Sounds to me like jpg might just decide to use those nice dueling gavels for something else.

The ways on E1945 were very rusty, so I put a brass brush into the DeWalt Power Shop, locked it into position and slipped the bar between the fence and brush. After no more than 10 minutes of sliding and turning, the first one came out beautiful.

Had they seen electrolysis prior to brass brushing? It looks real good!! How severe was the pitting?
