I stand corrected. There is more than one version of the Spindle Knob. Jkroofer your Spindle Knob has a shorter inner ring (see arrow on your picture below) than the Spindle Knob from the Quill Assembly that came with my Power Pro Upgrade a couple of years ago. My 2001 Quill Assembly has the longer inner ring too. Maybe SS does not sell the Spindle Knob separately from the Quill Assembly since there is more than one version of the Spindle Knob which makes getting the correct one more difficult.

Note larger intermediate diameter in addition to the length. The quill body has a coresponding larger bore.

Looking at my 2 bearing quill, I am not sure what the function is other than as a dust shield(hence the larger intermediate od).

Sent customer service an email. Curious to see their response. Sure wish I could just buy a new one.

I'm coming in a little late on this but back at some points in time shopsmith use to fill the hex and some of the threads with a gunk. If you have not cleaned all of that off and out then this could be your problem. The allen wrench need to bottom out in the hole and any remaining gunk will keep the set-screw from turning out.

last time my set screw would not free up, I bought a hex drive socket and put it on an impact wrench. worked great. was that a bad idea?

Don't take this as gospel. But I believe that on my 2005-vintage Mark V, that "spindle knob" bears against the inner race of the front spindle bearing, thereby locking the bearing into position against a shoulder on the spindle. In any case, I can adjust my spindle knob to take axial play/slop out of the spindle. Mounting a sanding disc, faceplate, etc. makes it easy to pull outward on the spindle, while simultaneously pushing the spindle knob back toward the bearing and locking it down.

My 520 is set up for a job right now, and I don't want to tear it down. But hopefully someone can confirm or deny this arrangement.
