The government does a good job in preventing private charity from helping the most vulnerable, by over regulation. Plus even the poorest Americans have TV, cell phones and other "luxuries", and 45 million americans get food stamps (so we have overweight poor) paid for by the 50% of Americians who actually pay federal taxes.

Paul, I don't believe you pay attention when you are out and around. Either that or you never leave the "safe side" of town. Believe me, the really poor do not have cell phones, TVs and other "luxuries" and they are not overweight.

Spend some time in the food kitchens dude -- especially during bad weather. It seems to me as though you lead a real sheltered life.

If one subscribes to the liberal press, one gets the impression that Republicans or Conservatives have little compassion for their fellow man. Fact is, they're more charitable than the Liberals or Democrats. If you don't believe it, you can Google "republican vs democrat charitable giving" or something else along those lines and see for yourself.

You also might want to Google "al gore tax return charity" and see what you find. I'll save you the trouble, one year he and wife Tipper gave a whopping $353 to charity, according to his published tax return. That was about $7 a week. How impressive is that! In 2011, Joe Biden gave 1.46 percent of his earnings to charity, Mitt Romney gave 19.1 percent.

Here's one story about George Bush in the news (you can check for more) -- President and Mrs. George W. Bush reported taxable income of $719, 274 for the tax year 2007 and paid $221,635 in federal income taxes, the White House said Friday. They contributed a total of $165,660 to churches and charitable organizations.

Yes, I know that there are programs like this that claim to resolve this problem and they are good but they do not reach the needy masses. Even the application seems to assume that the applicant has internet access. The person who sleeps under the bridge does not.

It is my opinion that one needs to go to where the real need exists before one really understands.

Well there's one thing for sure. Emotions run high on both sides of this issue. Always has and always will. However, this election cycle the gap between the sides seems wider than ever. Seems big business adheres to the Gordon Gekko Greed is Good line of reasoning while the poor and middle class workers believe the government should help the down and out. I say we all take a deep breath and give the current administration a chance to implement their plans and if they don't improve life for everyone in 4 years, kick the bums out, in the meantime, let's all try to get along.

You are absolutely right...
On the other hand owning 5 Shopsmiths and keeping them upgraded can do a pretty good job of keeping you fairly poor...

But again as far as I know there is nothing in the bill that addresses the very poor any differently than they are today.

I think this is what most people miss when speaking about the bill.

The poor got healthcare through Medicaid before and they get care through Medicaid after nothing changed.

What did move is max limits of the eligible for Medicaid, it moved up if you are making more than the limit you are expected to have insurance.

Now see I broke my promise not to say anymore. I repent.
