Hmmmm. This machine is starting to make me wonder. Several of the parts had green paint under the gold/copper. Now that I'm doing some more research on the drive system, I believe I have a Gilmer drive. Did the Greenie ever come with a 1 1/8 hp motor? Or did the Goldie ever come with the Gilmer drive? My guess is the answer to both these questions is no. I think I just have a mutt. Here's a picture of the drive sleeve to confirm.

I'm not the expert here but that does not look like my poly-v drive. Therefore, I assume it is a Gilmer.

However, having a mutt is not bad. It just means you have a couple decisions to make. Basically, what do you want to end up with. You have the unit apart, pick your destination and start putting it back together.

Copper and Gold on Green. I'd put money on Copper and Gold being a rustoleum job over what was the Greenie.

If you are going to repaint, I would not do so without striping the secondary coat (copper and gold) and getting down to a firm base. Then, whatever color you prefer. They all run sweet was they are reconditioned.

Thats what I was thinking too. The green paint underneath is so much more solid.

I was quoted approx $300 for powder coating the Headstock, carriage end pieces and legs. This did not include Initial prep. They wanted an additional $200 for sand blasting.

I could get another SS for that so I skipped it. I could probably set up my own Powder coating operation for less than that. But why bother?? 6 cans of Rustoleum Hammer Rattle can paint (4 black and 2 silver) ran me less than $40 including the tax.

Wow I don't blame you! For that kind of money I'll probably go with hammered paint too. I think mine is going back to being a Greenie :)

I'd love to hear some opinions on the Gilmer vs. poly v drive. Should I switch? I'd like a 2 bearing quill at some point. I see Bill Mayo sells one for the Gilmer drive.

I's keep the gilmer drive, since it wood cost about $500.00 to switch to a poly v drive.

All Greenies were gilmer & 3/4 hp motor & 1 7/8" bench tubes.

'Early' goldies were the same( conflicting reports on the tubes).

'Later' goldies and all up to the PP were poly-v, 1 1/8 hp.

If yours has a 1 1/8 hp motor, consider that a bonus.

I like mutts!;)

Well that clears things up! Thanks for the info. Looks like I won't be returning the gold and copper paint I picked up :D
