Loose Set Screw

I need to know what Reference Number 31 on the parts list is. I have a document that reports it to be part number 222458 while at the same time describing it as 5/16"-18x3/4".

I suspect that it is 5/16"-18x1/4" which makes the part number correct and the description in error.

Is this the set screw for the power hub? The drawing that I have is illegible.

My manual shows it as 1/4" long set screw with the part number you referenced.

Thank you very much. The online parts explosion seems to be incorrect as it is listed there to be 3/4" long.

Part #31 is a set screw to hold the drive hub onto the shaft. Can't find any measurement like you found, here is the line from the parts list.
31 222458 Allen Setscrew 1 0.80

Part #40 has the measurements you gave us. There are a couple of additional set screws that secure the eccentric mounting tubes.
40 222460 Setscrew 5/16"-18 x 3/8" 2 0.80

Those dimensions are not called out in the parts list. That description was "assigned" by yours truly. Sorry if I did not make that clear.

That is the biggest reason why I created that word document l;isting the set screws descriptions and part numbers. In many locations the parts list just says "set screw".

I keep reporting this in hopes that someone at Shopsmith will pick up on it and update their documents.

There is some play between the Drive Sleeve Assembly (56) and the Spindle Assembly (62) that can be attributed to the Drive and Ring Assembly (57). This play closely resembles the play that you feel when the arbor is not tight to the drive shaft (loose arbor set screw).

Just hoping you have this solved and you are back to making sawdust safely.

Thanks Dusty for your concern. The play was(is) in the chuck--I have to tighten them periodically.

I finally did solve the problem I had with my OneWay Talon chuck...I bought a lathe.

Now to move on to the drill chuck problem.

Do you have to tighten the chuck onto the shaft or a bit into the chuck. If your issue is the later, I have no ideas. If it is the chuck coming loose on the shaft, I would try a set screw with a nylon patch.

This is a highly used item and I suspect the threads get worn much more quickly than on other set screws. A nylon patch may resolve that issue.
