Having a little trouble (what else is new?) in getting the chuck on the quill for the drill press.
I notice there is no flat spot where the set screw is and the chuck doesn't want to slide on to the quill.
Here is my chuck:
And all the accessories or attachments I have found.
Does this look like the right chuck or does work with some combination.
It was pretty rusty and I cleaned a lot of gunk out of it.
Maybe needs more?
Thanks again for your patience.

Re: New owner of an older machine.
Under best circumstances, the drill chuck can be a pretty tight fit on the spindle. So you really want to make sure you’ve cleaned up the chuck well. I’ll use a medium grit sanding pad to clean up those I’m restoring, and then some paste wax to give it a bit of lubrication (polish and lube the spindle as well). I’ll even pull the set screw to relieve some air pressure buildup when it’s really tight!larryfoster wrote: Wed Sep 24, 2025 7:51 pm Having a little trouble (what else is new?) in getting the chuck on the quill for the drill press.

Thanks, John.
It was really crusty inside when I cleaned it yesterday.
Looks like I need to do a better job.
Good enough just wasn't.

Evaporust
The quill shaft tapered flat does NOT extend all the way to the end of the shaft so as to provide a stop for a loose attachment.

Re: New owner of an older machine.
larryfoster,
Follow the recommendations for cleaning it up that John and JPG gave you. I have also used a Dremel tool with a small wire brush to get into the mounting hole to help clean it up after removing any rust. Avoid using abrasives to clean up the mounting hole as much as possible. As John said,
JPG mentioned that the Tapered Flat of the Quill's Spindle does not go all the way to the end as seen in the picture below. Having the full round of the Spindle on each exposed end keeps accessories mounted staying true. When mounting an Arbor, Chuck, etc. to the Spindle make sure it seats firmly against the Spindle Knob.
_ .
I can't tell for sure which Drill Chuck you have from your picture.
In the picture below are almost all of the Drill Chucks supplied with the Shopsmith Model 10's and Mark Tools over the years. The missing one is a Jacobs Multi-Craft Chuck like the one on the left of the top row. It would be 27100 version 2 with different markings on the Chuck.

Below is a picture of the Jacobs Multi-Craft Chuck missing from the picture above.
_ .
You can see many of the Drill Chucks look very similar. the three middle ones on the bottom row differ only in the set screw they have. The two Jacobs Multi-Craft Chucks on the top left plus the one shown in the separate picture differ in the labeling on the Chuck. The same is true about labeling for the three on the top row mid to right. Three of the Chucks have 2 different part numbers for the same Chuck. 2 are because all part number changed first in November 1951 and again early 1964. 206100 going to 27100 was a part number change for just that Drill Chuck. You can find different part numbers for the Drill Chucks besides the ones listed but most likely are for individual parts that make up the Drill Chuck Assembly not the entire Assembly which are the part numbers listed.
There was a fourth version of the Jacobs Multi-Craft Chuck shown in the picture below that I cannot confirm if it was ever supplied with a Shopsmith Mark tool. It differs in shape from the other three.
_ .
The above information does not include the 515953 1/2" or 556273 5/8" Keyless Chucks Shopsmith has sold.

You want to maintain that tight fit to avoid getting any wobble to the Drill Chuck when mounted.Under best circumstances, the drill chuck can be a pretty tight fit on the spindle.

Re: New owner of an older machine.
Wow!
Thank you for all that detail, Russ.
Haven't been out to the shop today, yet.
Was thinking about the Dremel and you confirmed it.
Will see what version of chuck I have.
