I knew, in the beginning of this thread, that I did not understand all of this gibberish so I got out my camera and starting looking for all of the controls.

Now, after a week, I know why I didn't understand. My camera doesn't have a single one of those. That also explains an earlier comment by someone about being a "point and shot" photographer. That's me - I point my digital camera ($125.00 digital camera) and shot. \

I get what I get.

Dusty,

I often wish that my SLR pictures turn out as well as your point and shoot pictures.

to me, one of the truest statements about photography (or telescopes, or woodworking) it that the best camera (telescope/tool) is the one that gets used and works when the occasion arises.

that does not stop me from carrying the best gear that I can borrow when I go to a shuttle launch, but it does also mean that I have one of the slimmest cameras that I can find that lives in my vest pocket all the time. I find it really handy to take pictures in the big-box and warehouse stores and then go home and online to research the items (or share the sale with family). that use never occurred to me until I started carrying it. I have gotten some neat (to me) pics on spur of the moment occasions, too. frequently not great pics (taking pics of the "shark fin" in Rosamond Lake out the driver's window while driving ain't easy, for example), but good enough to remember the moment.

I think that the sunny 16 was a rule of thumb for general landscapes.

thanks for getting me to remember some old photo techniques.

How can ya have a family with no quibbling? :D. I'll agree with your rational on your choice of 'closer to f22'. What's an f-stop amongst family.

OK Ivan (or others), here's another. It's 10 minutes before sunset, Anywhere USA. You have a polarizing filter on your lens. Where would you point your camera to get maximum polarizing effect?

I agree with that! Dusty you do some fine work with that point & shoot.

Keep up the good work, both with the camera & your Shopsmith.
