My comment was meant to apply to the single double bearing quill I have.
I’ve never needed to pull it, but wouldn’t my 2005-vintage machine have a two-bearing quill? I can definitely feel some end play when the spindle knob is removed.

Having only limited experience with the one dual bearing quill and since there are multiple versions, I simply do not know.

I assume the quill shaft has a shoulder behind the front bearing and assume the shaft has a similar shoulder behind the rear bearing. So I do not know where the possibility of end play exists. One thing is for sure, the original collar is too short to apply any pressure against the inner race of the two bearing quill.

Perhaps those with more experience will chime in and educate us all.

Wow!
Got an email back from Shopsmith
Unfortunately, we only sell the quill spindle with the complete quill we do not sell individual components due to special equipment being required for the assembly.
You would need to replace the whole quill 555088 Two-Bearing Quill Retro-Fit Kit $174.64.
Luckily, I have a 2 bearing quill with 0 end play. Pretty sure this piece just keeps dust out.
I’ll be trying tonight and tomorrow to get my set screw loose. I’ll let you know how it goes

JPG,

Thanks for posting the side by side comparison of the knobs. Better than me posting just my knob.

As for the comment about the gunk filling the hole, that is correct and I know from experience. Anything in the socket hole that keeps the Allen Wrench from going in all the way will cause stripping at the end. I use a small pick to get all the gunk out. From another comment, I haven't used the Allen Sockets and wrench on this particular set screw but have used them on stubborn set screws on Model 10s with success.

If anyone else has this problem, just drill and tap a new hole. Now to figure out where I just stole a set screw from. Bahahaha

You need to figure out how to get the set screw centered on the mini flat(not the 'main' flat).
