Very nice bowl, Brian. What are the approx. dimensions?

It's only about cereal bowl size. I've made a few from that tree. Locust is a dense wood! Gotta sharpen often..

I turned my first object on the lathe this past week. I wanted to make a white oak cup for my brother to drink his whiskey out of. It was both easier and harder than I expected it to be. I ran into a couple spots that kept chipping out, I think I had end grain that I kept hitting. I ended up keeping those areas unfinished and made them features of the cup. All in all, I'm pretty happy with how it came out for my first attempt.

Dzawacki, a cup is challenging for a first project on a lathe. It took me a long time before I tried something that challenging. Came out good.

Because I don't turn much and don't have an ER, I'm just checking this thread out now. There's some really good work here.

Feel free to post photos and information regarding turnings on any Shopsmith; but, please indicate what model Shopsmith was used, if not a 10ER.

Thanks! I'm going to try something easier next time. I don't want to get frustrated and stop altogether

Here's another recent turning I did on my 10ER... I am a high school teacher and our carpentry class scraps tons of small cut offs that I snag quite often. If you have lots of scraps here's a good way to use it up and practice!

Very nice, Brian. Nothing bettter than free wood. Actually, that is what got me really into turning. A neighbor had cut down a maple tree, and the wood was destined for the firepile. I grabbed some, and got a lot of turning out of it. Now, I am always on the lookout for felled hardwood trees for constant turning supply.

I just viewed this thread on a PC instead of my iPad and noticed all my photos are sideways! Ha. Sorry to make folks turn their head!
