Very interesting! Does this have the same force as a patent filing?

Be prepared to see a warning label to NOT run the saws in reverse. This would apply to any arbors not having a keyway/slot .
Common sense tells you the blades will not work in reverse, but some idiot could figger out to mount the blade backwards also!
Maybe it will all be fail safed with electronic sensors. Unique arbors / blades that the unit needs. Blades with have a chip to detect orientation, arbor will have one to make sure blade is on correctly and that unit isn't is reverse...

. Unit doesn't see a ShopSmith proprietary chip and it won't even run. This would also give them full control of what goes on their machine. No more aftermarket universal arbors or blades.

FWIW, THAT is a recipe for disaster! I am assuming it was made in jest! If not, you need to get away from the Pacific Ocean!(or go be Gutterman's neighbor).

I think the chip idea is great. As long as we are talking wood chips.
The biggest issue I see is with threaded arbors which are common for both saw and lathe mode. A locking or keyed saw arbor would not be a big deal to provide with the PowerPro. (A second "outboard" set screw would do the trick)
As far as aftermarket lathe items, I would think this is warning label territory. Plus, when the piece starts turning the the wrong direction I don't think it would take long for the operator to notice.
Not to discount that the progress on producing better idiots has been astounding.

Hopefully, this is an indication release of the new headstock is in the NEAR future!
Well, we can always HOPE - can't we?:D

This is not a good rationalization(ask YUBA! Ask the 'sawstop' 'victim'![hablamas espanol(??) required]) I refer you to your last paragraph above!
It appears the legal beagles are way out in front!

I wonder how much I could get if I spilled a hot cup of McDonalds coffee on myself while attempting to trim my fingernails on my router. After all, both RouterStop and CoffeeStop technology are technically feasible, and should be included in even a $60 Dremel.
The thing that REALLY pisses me off about the SawStop lawsuit is that if they wanted SawStop technology, they could have paid the money and bought it. Instead they made the decision to save money and get a Ryobi. (A very low cost Ryobi at that.) I don't know who was sitting on that jury, but kudos to the prosecutions selection team.
When SawStop offers their licence for free, then I'll believe they care about their fellow man. Until then, I can only surmise they are in it for the money and nothing else.
