They don't have to. They're the big dog. They have the largest market share. By a huge margin. So, web programmers have to put "workarounds" in their code to check if the user is using IE, then point to the code that is specifically for IE.mickyd wrote:Why would Microsoft not consider that? Because they are 'microsoft' and maybe did not agree with the 'standards' for their own selfish reasons(or whatever reasons).
As Heath said, it makes others jump through hoops just to accomodate the vast majority of 'users' who only use microsoft stuff thus preventing the others from pursuing other more productive endeavors. AND...... since 'they' are the largest customer base they can get by with implying the others(who are adhering to 'industry standards' are not complying with their(microsoft) 'standards'.
Tis quite an advantage to be a 300 lb gorilla, but not to any advantage for the 'user'.

I am once again free to make sawdust. I have returned all three computers back into functional units. While doing so, I got a great exposure to the gaming machine. I gaming machine with the ability to interface with four different large monitors simultaneously.heathicus wrote:If pinging 127.0.0.1 works, in addition to checking for a firewall, you might also want to see if the IP address was statically set. For your home network, I'm sure you'll want it set to DHCP.
The problem with my last machine was really fundamental but it kicked my butt. The fix turned out to be a simple reload of the Ethernet driver. I had done that several times from within Device Manager with no favorable results. I finally went to the Gateway site and downloaded a full set of drivers for this machine and reloaded the needed driver. Viola: that fixed the problem.
Only took about three days to resolve the Ethernet problem. Sure would not work as a day job.

The big one, the one with four high resolution graphics cards and four hard drives (actually a Raid configuration) now has a home in my daughters embroidery shop. Multiple displays and an ungodly amount of memory and hard drive capacity were its primary selling point.
The other two are moving around from place to place within the family arena. It seems that I opened a can worms. Now I have to determine just how I prevent becoming the family computer troubleshooter. This was a problem that I never anticipated but walked right into.
