I purchased an older Shopsmith 10E with most of the attachments several years ago but am just getting set up to use it and thought I would like to turn some winestoppers. I purchased a winestopper set which includes a tapered mandrel and drill bit. The drill bit worked fine by inserting it into the chuck which I attached to the 5/8" spindle. However, the mandrel is too large to fit into the chuck but it appears it could replace the spindle if it can be removed.

Can the spindle be removed and what steps are required to do this?

The spindle is part of the quill shaft which is all one piece. You can take it apart, but then you don't have a tool anymore.
