I have a Mark V 500 that has lots of areas with paint scrapes (same for a belt sander). I'd like to get it looking better. Will the SS gray touchup paint for older models (505706 Gray 12oz Spray Can--before 10-01-2001) work on areas larger than a tiny scrape (like 8" x 1/2")? Mainly, does it blend really well or not so well?

I'm thinking that if it doesn't really match (if the touched-up area is easy to tell), I'd rather repaint the entire piece. Bottom line is i'd much rather use the touchup paint!

My experience with matching Shopsmith Gray has not been good. Why? Because there have been at least two or three different versions of gray used. I have two Mark Vs and a couple other SPT that are different shades of gray.

I think this might be because different spray cans of paint (even those with the same part number) come out different because of age of paint, how it was stored and prepared and how it was applied.

I'd buy enough to paint the whole thing and then use it soon after you get it.

My experience with touch-up paints of any type, has always been the same as yours. Was holding out hope that this may be better!

Rust-oleum makes a textured gray spray enamel that is a pretty good match to some of the gray Shopsmiths I've had. When used on an entire machine it looks really good & I've done up some separate parts & they look pretty good. On one machine it looked a little light & on another it was almost dead on, so I agree on Shopsmith using different grays over the years.

Is that the exact name of the paint "textured gray"? Does it hold up pretty well?

I saw a mention of another paint at Ace hardware that I may try as well...."Ace Premium Enamel, Machinery gray".

I have nothing against the Ace paints but I would not chance anything other than Rustoleum Hammered Paints for what we are discussing. Yes, if you clean the existing paint and use primer where needed (bare metal), it holds up quit well.

I think I looked at Ace Machinery Gray and it seemed to be too light. I tried an Ace Dark Smoke Gray, that was closer but still too light.

Hey Allsas, have you posted a thread or any pics of the under-SS storage in your avatar? It looks interesting.
