Has anyone used the velcro sanding discs

Oh and while I'm at it how do you make a link here with something like the
word link showing instead of the entire web address showing? like above.

certainly the velcro would be much faster changing grits but does it really
lay as flat? would the money be better spent buying more discs ?

I have converted to the velcro system and find it much easier to use. No solvent to clean the disc before adhering a new grit.

The velcro sanding disk was the first upgrade that I did to my SS when I bought it in 1993... Im so glad I did it!

it may not be best suited for sharpening tasks on the disc sander because of the "softness" of the velcro backer and hook sheet. Beyond that though, I cant think of one disadvantage.

I believe there is warning not to use the velcro for sharpening. The heat generated will do damage to the hook-and-loops.

I've been using the velcro sanding disk for about 3 years. I use the to make my picture frames stock all the same size before I mitre. I can get everything down by 64's so when I mitre, I'm almost spot on. For anything that I plan to join, I use the sanding disk to ensure all my parts are near exactly the same size. Changing grits is a breeze and the $5 for the cleaner will make the disk last so much longer. I can't understand why those disks couldn't be used for sharpening. It seems to me, however I have never tried, but it seems that they would burn the metal just as quickly as the others.

I have, and use with zero issues, the velcro system. It is extremely easy to change out the disks and save them for reuse. I also have 2 disks, without the velcro, for tool sharpening purposes. I use one for each of the two different grits of sharpening sand-paper. It is highly recommended that you do not use the velcro system for sharpening; you can damage the sand-paper disks and the velcro pad that is on the metal disk.

What with the sanding disk spinning toward you and the sharp end of the chisel or turning tool facing into the spin a quick dig into the sandpaper and velcro backing could go badly quickly. It's to easy and inexpensive to have both a disk for sanding with velcro and a disk for sharpening without velcro and not take the chance of a injury.

Kool.. I got around 20 stones 7 or 8 diamond hones and three two-wheel grinders a work sharp some old strops and I'm acculturating stuff to make
a wet grinder.
So as soon as I'm lucky enough to need to sharpen some chisels again
I'm all set.
