Why is the double-tilt upgrade not suitable for a model 500? The SS website say "for 505, 510 and 520 only".

Perhaps to force you to discover the joy of upgrading:mad:

The work table support tubes on 500's are pinned with smaller pins than those on the 505/510/520. Also on the newer models the pin goes all the way through the casting.

Everything else from the double tilt should work on the 500.

Thanks for the replies. So, theoretically, could a 500 owner drill proper size holes through the "bottom" of the new tubes and flip them?

I think there it may be possible to rotate and drill the top of the tube to match the top of the 500 casting. Here a couple of pics to get your mental juices going.

I forgot to note that the shiny tube is from the double tilt upgrade and the older tube is one that I removed from a 500 table. I apologize if I am stating the obvious.

Or... buy a table, carriage, fence and extension table from an original Mark VII. Use a second pivot end from a 500 on the left end and use longer removable pivot pins as we discussed here some time back.

Or... get an original Mark VII and put a PowerPro headstock on it. :)
I still think a Mark VII headstock should be convertible to a PP but I understand why it is not a can of worms that SS would want to dive into...:)
Just not enough Mark VII's out there to be worth their effort when you can just change out the complete headstock.

Obvious? - maybe.

But But But . . . . . . Why is there not rack teeth on both sides of the shiny upgrade tube?????

Never mind!!! Closer look at the top pix just barely reveals it!:o

Then there are the 'details' of the way tube rack and 'vacuum blower' and speed control mount . . . .:D

I never used the word "easy"... :D
The way tube rack may not be in the way, but it comes off quickly if it is. The dust collector has already been broken or removed on a lot of them, not a biggy. Not a big feature
Speed control mount? That is why engineers make more money than the guy hanging off of the back of a trash truck at 20 below zero. :D

The feature maybe worth saving is the table positioning shaft that will lock the carriage and headstock together in a remembered setting.

Not impossible, just not worth it to SS especially since SS Inc. didn't make it but catches the crap for its 2 weaknesses.
