I am involved with a project that will require two pieces of Gaboon ebony. I want the blackest black I can get. 20" x 5" x 1"- two pieces. Anyone know where the best pieces left in the world might be for sale?

I saw there is very limited supplies, so I thought someone here might know. I've seen madagassy, but I'm wanting pure black that looks like plastic.

Thanks in advance,

Tony

You may have trouble findiing the real dead black ebony. Saw a TV episode some time back that said that the really black ebony is hand picked by musical instrument manufacturers for clarinets and some other woodwind instruments. It will probably be in the high$$ range if you do find it. The TV show also showed that it was machined on metal lathes due to the hardness.

If it does not have to be ebony but merely black.

Google ebonize wood there some cost effective solutions. Some better than others. I have heard of people having great results with India Ink.

Another alternative especially if you are going for the glossy look is black lacquer.
