I own a 1954 green mark V that is in rehab. I have been offered a model 510. Mfg year 1986, purchased in 1987(as recalled, I did not check the data plate). Never unpacked, greasy, still has cardboard packing on tubes and red tape over switch. Before I closed the deal 8 tried to turn the motor by hand, no deal. Plugged it in, removed stale old masking tape from the red square plastic switch. Flipped the switch momentarily, motor hums but no movement.
Is there an unpacking and set-up procedure I am not aware of for the power head? Is there a safety switch that I missed?
This is a great deal for a new open/old stock item, but I want to know what I am getting into... any ideas?
Thanks!

It might be a great deal even given the motor problem. If the motor has never been run, there can not be much wrong with it. Try spinning the motor by hand and then apply power.
Does this motor have oiling ports? If it does, oil it, spin it and then apply power.
thanks for reply dusty...

I tried to move by hand. Didn't want to man handle something I do not own yet or reveal too much to the seller who inherited it, is cabinet maker trained(uses stand alone shop equipment), but know nothing about SS.
It is quite a contrast for me, as a SS noob with an old greenie, to see a nice shiny new one ready for assembly.
Sounds like I will make an offer later... what is a resonable price? Asking >900.

What is it worth? That is a tough question and is one that can be answered ONLY by a person who is thinking seriously about buying it.
Does it come with anything like a bandsaw or dust collector OR is it a Mark V period?
Nine hundred dollars is close to what a new Mark 5 cost about 20 years ago.

Is there anybody here that has actually bought a new, still in the box,500/10/20 ? Maybe there is some type of packing that is preventing the internals from turning.

I bought my 520 new in 2004, and I don't remember any packing material which would prevent the motor turning. Then again, I barely remember what I did yesterday, so take that with a large grain of salt.
I would imagine the belts have taken quite a "set" if they haven't moved in 25 years. Or maybe they're stuck to the sheaves if it's been in a hot location for that long.

I believe you have probably just made the most sensible statement that has been made yet about why this unit does not turn on and why the drive shaft does not turn. A belt with a set or stuck in the sheaves are almost probable conditions.

I only saw a dust collector and a joiner. No other accessories. All only partially unpacked.
Sure would save me a lot of time in tuning and polishing...
The seller was going to call me tonight. I will ask more questions/search stored area for other parts. Sadly it is not well organized, in a tornado of a garage.
Either way, I will try to work a better deal and bring this orphan 510 home to the shop!
I have a joiner, bandsaw, belt sander, shaper, disc/drum sander... need lathe cutting tools.

If as you described(still not unwrapped) there is little of a serious nature that is preventing rotation(more torque applied would probably be successful). Nix on any more attempts to get motor running until it is 'freed' up.
The non-rotating condition is a justification for reduced price offer(pig in a poke as seen by the seller).
Not clear is whether DC or jointer are included(or anything else not yet revealed).
As Dusty said, the question is, what is it worth to you? For just the 510, 900 might be a bit high, but then, it is essentially new(albeit almost old enough to vote).
Good Luck with it.
If you do get it, we be here to help get er up & running. First thing I would try(after getting it home, not prior to picking it up at the tornado area
) would be to attach a sanding disc and really torque(by hand) the shaft.
If that does not free it, remove the belt cover and make sure the motor belt is not stuck to the pulleys.
BTW where is the speed control set as shipped(do not change it([yet]).

If I remember correctly yes there is packing within the headstock that has to be removed. I seem to remember something over the speed control and something between the sleaves. However I checked the owners manual on initial setup and there was no mention of anything. So.........
"I tried to move by hand. Didn't want to man handle something I do not own yet or reveal too much to the seller who inherited it, is cabinet maker trained(uses stand alone shop equipment), but know nothing about SS."
It does sound like you may be playing your hand a little close to the vest. I think before I spent $900 (sounds like the owner knows more about SS than you think) I would get both of you to show your cards.
My guess someone was trying to adjust the speed control without turning the machine on. Very Common thing to do.
