Okay - I think it's a "no brainer" but have to sell the idea to my wife. I have a wonderful Mark V bought new in 1983. Just upgraded with the Shopsmith wheels (GREAT and should be "standard"). I love the idea of the new headstock but I have the basic machine and tables from 1983. If I do the 'upgrades' (headstock and tables/legs)- I'd have the same $ in the machine as if I bought one new (and I should be able to sell this one for a few dollars) - RIGHT??????? (Quick Father's Day is around the corner.)

If you are going to buy all your upgrades from SS then you should probably just get a new machine. Even if you were to go with craigslist for another machine that was a 510/520 plus the PP headstock, the only real advantage you would probably see would be if the unit you were to find off of craigslist had tons of SPTs and accessories that you didn't already have.

Now tell me why you would spend an amount equal to the cost of a Mark 7 just to upgrade your existing machine.

I use that money to order your new Mark 7 (complete with warranty and special offerings) and then either sell or keep your old unit. In fact, I would go so far as say convert your existing unit into a 'shorty' and use it as your spt power station.

I guess you could always sell it to offset the cost of the Mark 7 'a little' but only if you must.

Easy decision if you ask me but you didn't really ask me.

I was looking at a similar situation, I bought an 83'vintage 500 with a couple of SPT's but missing a lot of the little things. I went to the Lowes demo and now I have the 500 and the Powerpro Mark 7. I was thinking about selling the 500 but... I decided to keep it as well.
Sometimes I will set up and it may take (too long) to finish what I had set up for and I need a different set up. No longer a problem:D just set up the other one. If you got the room, it works out nice. If room is an issue then give Dusty's option some thought. Be careful though, I hear that they sometimes breed faster than rabbits.

Or you could buy this 520 for $400, add a PowerPro for $1,400 and you would almost have a 7 for $1,800

It is neither a 510 nor a 520 and you would also need the Mark 7 upgrade.

Still a good deal as a belt sander and bandsaw will each Ebay for about $200... Lots of other goodies in that "pile". Horrible merchandising though.
That kind of sloppiness in what amounts to a public presentation makes my "I wonder if it ever had any maintenance at all?" flag pop up...

That unit "LOOKS" like one that has been cared for.

Now about selling the one to be replaced by the new Mark 7... First you convince the wife as to how much selling it will reduce the cost of the Mark 7. Then you start "getting it ready to sell". Take a really crappy picture of it in front of a junkyard or something and list it on CL for maybe $3200.
After it does not sell ("Gee honey, I tried...") blend it back into the shop with the rest of the shop and never mention it again.
BTW, this might be a really good time to update something of size in the kitchen.
