I'm going to be changing the Bench and Way Tubes on my SS 500. Is there anything tricky to putting the head stock back on. I understand that when you have any work done on the head stock at the factory that they put cardboard tubes in place to make it easier to put it back on the Way Tubes.

Do you have different tubes to swap out?

I was just able to reach my fingers in the holes and turn the locks so the flat part was facing to the center. If you loosened the locks to take the headstock off, they should be loose enough to put it back on again. You may need to make sure you push on the lock handle to make sure it is centered. Mine had a little back and forth play.

Headstock Wedges

If your finger is too short to reach the headstock wedge, try using a screwdriver with the handle into the headstock tube hole to rotate the wedge(s) until the wedge flat side is facing down. I always place the wedges completely open and locked before removing the headstock. Another way is to almost fully open the wedges and looking into the tube hole, rotate the outside surface of each wedge until the flat is facing down. Never had to use cardboard or similar material to align the headstock wedges before mounting the headstock since my fingers are long enough to easly align the wedges.
