Motor Sheave

Is it hard to depress the spring to pull off the Motor Sheave and clean and polish the shaft. I tried to press it with a piece of wood with a hole in the middle but couldn't push the spring down.

I don't know how large you are but I am 6'1" and about 210 lbs and I use a board the same as you do to compress the spring. I make the board long enough so that I can place it over the spring with one end of the board under my left arm pit. I put my left hand on the other end of the board. Then I lower the board by crouching and guide the shaft with the clip through the hole in the board and remove the clip with snap ring pliers. Remove the spring tension SLOWLY. Make a non through hole with a forstner bit to capture the large washer and a smaller hole to pass the shaft through. I think that this procedure is described in the "Power tool for woodworking for everyone" book. Also known as PTWFE.

I like the idea of the double size hole. I just made a one inch hole. Are you using a 1 x 2 board or something larger. If I can't get it I may have to make something with all thread to help me compress the spring. I guess the next hard thing is putting it back.

I got the spring off and it is probably a good thing as the Sheave was not moving on the motor shaft. I had to use a claw hammer to nudge it away from the front Sheave of the motor. Now I'll need to clean up the shaft and the inside of the Sheave and then it a good oiling.
I'm not sure if the Sheave closest to the motor needs to come off since it doesn't move.

I used a piece of 1X4 to make the tool.

Hopefully it has not!;)
When they do move it is often towards the motor(not good!).
Letting the floating sheave slam into the fan sheave can cause it to move thusly.
i.e. when pulling apart under spring tension, do not let it slip!
Slipping fixed motor sheave

I have been plagued for several years by the fixed half of the sheave on the motor shaft slipping and getting stuck against the motor mount. It is held in place by a set screw but it's almost impossible to tighten that screw enough to hold the part in place for more than a short time. I've gotten pretty good at removing the spring and disassembling the motor sheave to address this problem - it's happened any number of times. Like to stop having to do it.
Anyone have ideas to offer for fixing this issue for good?

There is supposed to be a spacer between the motor and the fixed sheave. Is yours missing or 'mashed'? It is part 124 on this
diagram.

Yes, that spacer (short piece of tubing) is very important! You probably have enough change in your pocket to buy one, but not the shipping! Good time to buy that other part you have needed or wanted to make shipping more reasonable.

I have the machine back together and it's running fine, for now. But I didn't know about the spacer - I don't think there is one on there because the fan sheave can slip right up against part 123. The fan blades have worn away their ends against that part. Thanks for letting me know about this - I'd probably better get the spacer for the next time I have to deal with this issue.
