...and I'm looking for a 10ER to bring back from the dead. I've posted a Want to Buy ad on Craigslist here in Richmond, VA but I'm not holding my breath. I figure "if" there are a few basket case 10ER's out there in this area, folks will be asking silly amounts for them after looking at eBay prices and deciding that Robert E. Lee or some other Southern general used it, making it a doubly rare find.

So, I'm slowly broadening my search. As a private pilot, two hours of flying opens a big area up but...and its a big one, weight and balance are critical to safe flight. What's the weight of a 10ER and how long are they? Hopefully, I'd be able to at least partially disassemble the tool but looking at some of the rust buckets you guys restore, I don't know that I can count on being able to take it apart.

You'll be fine. It should weigh about 250 I believe. They come right apart. Check eBay as well. Search by distance nearest first. I missed one in spotsylvania a year ago for 200 bucks.

Some pop up around here from time to time as well. I saw a couple advertised on Craig's list back in the spring. One was in OC and the other I believe was in Easton. The one in OC didn't look to be in all that bad of shape. I might have taken interest in it myself if I had been going in that direction.

I completely restored an ER in 1985 and it was still so difficult to work with so I sold it. It was beautiful but was a PITA to do any real work. If you want something to look beautiful in your garage and sip martini's and get praise from those few who see it/her, then go with the 10ER and restore it. If you want something that can do some work and contribute to more than making you feel good because:D you restored it, go for a Mercedes Benz 500 Gullwing.

I'm looking into two ER-10s right now. One's here in Richmond, if it works out. As to why I'm doing it, mostly for fun - I would likely set it up for sanding work. I've got a 510 (waiting on SS to send the upgrade parts to make it a 520) and I'm happy with it...and I've got a 500 that's up for sale.

It's good to know they're a pain to set up - that may be a bargaining tool.<g>

Other than weight, the only 'pain' setting up that I am aware of is the speed. With a 'speed changer' that is at least partially eliminated(ya still gotta change belts between hi/lo range).

Hell, if the 10 er is hard to setup I'm missing something. It's as easy as the mark five. Speed control is a pain if not for the speed control. The 10 er is even heavier. I didn't buy the one I was scouting, but I loved how much heavier it was in certain areas.
