Reversing a 510
Does anyone know if there is a way to reverse the direction of the 510 so when sanding you can go in either direction.

By modifying the internal motor wiring(not possible with an Emerson motor) and adding an external direction switch(which functions only at startup).jimjulien wrote:Does anyone know if there is a way to reverse the direction of the 510 so when sanding you can go in either direction.

Here is a link to the thread when I reversed my 1955 with an A.O. Smith brand 3/4 hp motor. I included the schematic wiring diagram that I used.

Just get a left hand threaded wood screw.lightnin wrote:You can move the work to the other side of the headstock to rotate opposite.
NOT when using a screw center though.

Reversing GE and AO Smith motors
I have been offering GE and AO Smith motors with the reversing capability. I have both motors that have been reversed and and ready for sale. I also can reverse these 2 motors for customers, I also offer the ability to use 110 VAC or 220VAC as input power by rearranging the wires with or without the reversing capability. I have several of the 110/220 VAC motors with reverse capability available for sale.
I have been offering this service for many years with no returns. I find the reverse motor works best with the MINI and SHORTY Shopsmiths but will fit all Mark V frames. The latest PowerPro Motor offers this same capability and list reasons for using the reverse capability..
I will be happy to respond to questions on these capabilities.

They are typically used as a power stand for SPT's and by being reversable can operate those SPT's from the end opposite from 'normal'.jimjulien wrote:Why do the motors work best with the Mini and Shorty Shopsmiths?

Many shorter Shopsmiths with reverse motors are used a sanding stations and lathe bowl turning so you can sand backward to remove fuzz from forward sanding. No additional power from single rotation.jimjulien wrote:Why do the motors work best with the Mini and Shorty Shopsmiths?
