I vote in favor of the dial indicator. I previously used the stop block rod in the miter gage and was probable within .005" on table and fence alignments by being very careful.

I find it easier to make the alignments with the DI.

Either way you have to hold the DI of miter gage bars against the same side of the miter slot when making a measurement because of the clearance between them. SS says you can try putting a piece of paper between the miter bar and the miter slot to remove the extra play when using the DI. Maybe Incra will make a zero clearance bar for the DI.
