I mentioned that I discovered som Disston saws.

Disston D-12 9 point crosscut Saw Before and after I sanded the blade with 220 and mineral spirits. The etch was completely hidden before, now you can make the etch although the photo doesn't show it well, it can at least be made out.



Before and after I sanded the handle to remove the old finish 1 coat of BLO to make the grain stand out, 3 coats of Deft Lacquer. The saw nuts were buffed with Tripoli then white diamond, the disston nut was cleaned up with brasso.



I still have a rip saw that needs just the blade reconditioned. Both saws are still very sharp and by far the best hand saws I have ever used.

The handle looks gorgeous!

BLO? I anticipate a Duh moment coming.

Thanks, It came out a bit darker than it was before, but it is still a bit lighter than the walnut handle of the Rip saw. Helpful way to tell the difference in a hurry.

I don't have an defore pics of just the ripsaw, these side by sides will have to do.
As you can see the blades were equally rusted and clean up was the same for both.

I just cleaned and sharpened a Geo. Bishop rip-saw I found at the antique store for $3. It turned out to have brass nuts and an applewood handle under all the grime. I'm now using it for a job that's not quite fit to either the bandsaw or the tablesaw.

They cleaned up nice. I have a couple that were my dads I need to clean up. How did you do to the saw blade?

My father-in-law has two saws with handles that look just like that in the tractor barn. They are pretty covered with surface rust and do not know if they are salvageable. The only reason I even noticed them was because I thought the handle design was unique. Unfortunately one of the handles on one has a broken tip on it. Guess I will have to go give them a closer look although I am afraid they may be beyond repair. The blades would probably need some kind of evaporust treatment but I am not sure how to do that with correctly if the wooden handles cannot be removed. Guess I will be making a trip back up to the barn today for a closer inspection.
