Can other Drive Centers besides the one that came with the shopsmith be used on the shopsmith headstock. I am used to using a Crown Drive Center on my other lathe.

Most likely not.
if it is a MT2 mount drive center then sadly no.
It must have a 5/8" bore that attaches to the spindles. I have not seen a method for attaching a mt Socket to the 5/8" spindle of the SS.
I have seen drive centers that can be mounted in a scroll chuck. but other than that SS Drive centers are the way to go.

Oneway makes a version of their Safe Driver drive center which fits the Shopsmith spindle:

First I've heard of. Thanks for this it's nice to know that there are sufficient SS users for manufacturers to recognize our needs. Not sure I'll get one as I will probably just use chuck mounted drivers if I need something other than my SS drivers.

Penn State Industries has a drive-center kit for about $60 that has six different drive centers and a fitting for holding them. The fitting mounts to a 1" x 8 TPI spindle and the drive centers screw into the fitting. One could use Penn State's Shopsmith to 1x8TPI adapter to use this kit on the Shopsmith. I've not used this item; just saw it in a catalog that arrived today.
