Anybody have any guesses what the two wooden things are that are shown hanging over the shelf? Look like they are designed to mount the way tubes, but their function is a mystery to me.

As long as your looking for a guess...how about it isn't a storage shelve at all, but a chip collector. The "wooden things" or "wings" nothing more than deflectors to collect the chips back in the box.

I'll buy that ... until someone comes up with a better explanation.

It is simply a box that hangs from the lower tubes that was designed to catch saw dust or chips when using the Shopsmith. That wing attached to the back of the box was there to deflect the shavings into the box. It could be moved along the back of the box to where it would be most effective. I believe the plans were in a HandsOn magazine from the early 1980s. I made one back then, but didn't keep it too long because it didn't work very well as I recall.

I have the plans for this that I bought from Shopsmith. I have had mine on my Mark V, Model 500 since 1981. It collects all the chips, sawdust, and small cuttoffs that I just throw into it. It will hold quite a bit and saves having to pick up and sweep the floor so often. I really like it. The two sliding uprights cause all the sawdust from the table saw to just fall down into the bin saving sweeping up the floor all the time. It is made of 3/8" plywood.

I like the look of this thing but I once went the other direction. Back when I was using "The Old Gray Mare" (my second SS) I had hung an open wire basket with a grid of about 1"x1" under the bench tubes as a place to toss accessory items and so the sawdust would fall on through to the floor.
I really don''t mind sweeping the floor... It is something I do while I stop and think (OK, try to remember something ).
I'm just grateful to have a floor to sweep. I didn't always.
