Shopsmith Forums

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on this forum for a long time and have gleened some great info here. A few weeks ago I saw a Shopsmith demo at Lowe's and worked out a pretty good deal so you know the rest of the story. I now have a Mark 7 and a bandsaw in the garage at needs my attention. I also order the dust collector system but it is on back order. I'm starting to read the books and hope to start putting it together Friday after work. I'm wondering if there is anything I should know about putting this thing together that isn't in the books?

Just a quick intro about me. I first become interested in shopsmith in the 1970's. I got a used '83 Mark V in the late '80s and used it in bedroom in our house for about 10 years mostly to make things for my wife and her friends to tole paint on. The tole painting died out and family grew and the Mark V ended up in a corner of the basement until recently when we moved. It's in need of TLC from lack of use but is in very good condition. The wife thinks it should go up for sale and I think the only thing better than 1 shopsmith in the garage is 2 shopsmiths in the garage. We'll see how it works out. I'm hoping to make it the subject of a thread on tune up and maintenance. The goal I have for my Shopsmith(s) now is to learn how to use and maintain them and grow my woodworking skill my building things for the house,the wife, the kids, the grandkids etc.

Hi Dave,

Just noticed you're from Collbran Colorado. I lived there for a few years way back in my Jr High School days. My parents gave me a new Schwinn 10 speed for my birthday and one afternoon I had a blast riding it down the canyon to the Colorado River. I didn't even think about telling anyone where I was going or how I was going to get back up that road. I got home way after dark that night. I also learned how to drive in a '68 VW Beetle there. Fond memories.

Yep, I got that thing and a few months later packed everything away. I'm going to some help figuring out how to use it. I've probably only ran it a few hours.

So how is the project going?
Remember on initial setup alignment is a key consideration. IMHO If it is in good alignment to start with it is easier to keep things square.

Alignment?? I put a baseball on the table and if it doesn't roll off it's aligned

What a concept, why have I never thought of that, oh I know I don't own a baseball. Jim
