I finally got my machine upside down and started the double-tilt upgrade. I went to remove the "left end" which has the headstock lock but found my headstock lock on the right end. As far as I know it has been this way since I got the machine. Now the question is once the double-tilt is installed are the end-symmetric. If not I would have to a complicated procedure to get it back together. My lift-assist is currently on the left. All the ends are labeled looking at the PowerPro display.

I am not even sure the instructions are not just messed up, it seems like the drill press would not have worked if the lock was not on the right side.

Where are you standing when referring to left/right end.

When looking from the power switch side(top side up), the left end has the lock and the right end the hinge.

When looking from the power switch side(legs up), the ends are reversed.

P.S. Methinks everything below the way tubes is symmetric (except the lift assist) on a double tilt.

When the legs are up and I am looking at the power switch, the latch is on the right. According to the Shopsmith directions left are right don't matter which side is up and I don't see how that is possible. They say the latch is on the left when the machine is upside down and you are facing the power switch.

I am beginning to think the instructions need work.

With that said if the double-tilt parts identical for both sides, it doesn't matter and I can just proceed as soon as I get some replacement lock washers.

We would be able to help better if we could read what you are reading.

Normally, when writing instructions like these, the machine will be referenced from the operators point of reference. Once the "left" end is identified, it is ALWAYS the "left" end even when viewing from the other side.

That is the reason that I always try to use references like headstock end or pivot end.
At least left / right is better than saying north / south...

And I refer to them as 'clamp' or 'hinge' end. That worked until Mark 7 arrived.

Forget left/right! Aux shaft/quill shaft end????

I like that approach. Doing it that way works with any Shopsmith including a Mark 7.

However, that would definitely mean the instructions (which I have not seen) would likely need to be revised.

Are you also implying SS instructions are 'ambiguous'?



After all the Mark 7 upgrade is attempting to create an ambidextrous machine.

No. I can't do that. I have not read the instructions. Paul, on the other hand, might say that.

Paul, I believe that until you involve the carriage and headstock the Mark 7 parts are interchangeable (left to right).

Do remember the pedals for the wheels. If I am not mistaken, you want those on the outfeed side because of perceived interference with the tool/accessory shelf. If you over look that, there is a fifty fifty chance you will be muttering bad things when you finally put it right side up.

Could it be that "someone" removed the headstock from the way tubes and replaced it "backwards"? I'm just sayin'.
