I recently used, for the 1st time, Famowood, water based wood filler and was extremely satisfied with the results. I used it under both stain and paint.

Thank you for the introduction. I have not tried it but I'll watch for it the next time I need filler.

Are we going to form a club?

Sometime back another member mentioned this great stuff.

I had never used it but thought what the heck I wasn't in love with any of the others that I've used. Can't say that any more.

Still have to see how the shelf life is for opened cans but other wise I'm happy.

I have never heard of Famowood. What is it and where does one find it?

Edit: Never mind. I just did a search and found it. I'll have to give it a try if you guys say it's good stuff.

May I suggest Durham's Rock Hard which is nearly identical to the Famo product the exception being is Rock Hard comes in a powder form which you mix with water.

Being powder I think it's shelf life is indefinite.

Also it is far cheaper than any premix. I think I bought a quart container of it for around $5-10. A quart of this stuff makes a lot of repairs.

I have had excellent results with it. I mix it with water but I also have mixed it with Wood Glue and saw dust from the project.

Easy to use, simple to clean up and when dried it produces a rock hard fix that will take stains and finishes.


I once used it to fix a bottom of the door on the side of the garage. Due to water damage the wood was rotted out at least 3/4 of an inch into the wood.
I dug out the rot, backfilled it with Rock Hard and when it dried I sanded and painted the door. Lasted as least 10 more years exposed to the same water that caused the original damage. I finally replaced the door and placed a water diverter over the door to eliminate the water torture.

I have also used it as tree dressing (as an experiment) after cutting off a few limbs. Here I mixed it with wood glue. Worked super.

If you can't tell I love the product.

I am also very fond of Durham's...
It will also work mixed thin without shrinking. One time I mixed a batch very soupy and filled a cheap set of hollow plastic chess pieces to weight them. It has been holding fine for about 40 years now.
Another time I had a sheet of 3/4" plywood that needed to paint very smoothly but it was quite rough including the oval patches the factory put in it. I mixed up a batch pretty soupy and painted in on the plywood (laying flat) with a brush. I re-sanded the surface. Came out great. That was a computer tape rack / cabinet that I made and sold to a company I worked for so I saw it in daily abuse for about 5 years and it was perfect when I left the company.
One night in a pinch I mixed a stiff batch and patched a bad spot on a plaster wall in a room we were painting. Painted over it in a half hour...
Oh, Yeah, I also use it as wood filler.

I must agree. For many years I used and appreciated the Durhams filler. During the last few years I have tried several newer and more expensive options. The bottom line is none of them hold up against the Durhams. I must confess it thrills me to see this thread. I truly believed I was the only woodworker in town that prefers the best old solution. Incidentally when packing to move to Colorado I discovered a quart of Durhams that I must have had for ten or fifteen years. I packed it and finally found the carton last winter. This stuff works a well now as it did when first purchased. Try it you'll like it. Jim

I could have written the same thing verbatim!:D Had the same experiences! all except the Colorado thing. Our moves were from Montana to Texas, to California. Still have a little left in the carton.
