I have been thinking of removing the legs of the Mark V and building a base cabinet with casters on the bottom. Storage is always a problem in a small shops and the legs seem to be a wasted space. Has anyone done this?

Not the way you describe, I built an under Shopsmith cabinet for my 500 in 1980. When I upgraded to the 510 it required some modification and when I added the lift-assist it became a stand-alone holder because it no longer fit under the Shopsmith. It did hold several saw blades, on arbors, on the doors. There are 5 doors, two large ones front and back and a smaller one on the front to cover some slide-out shelves The jointer fit inside and today I store the bandsaw and jointer on top.

The shelves have 5/8" dowels positioned to hold many accessories in one place, things like the drill chuck, dado blades and lathe chuck. Another shelf holds other lathe accessories. There is one large fixed shelf over the jointer area originally for the floating shelves but now I store them on the wall using the Shopsmith brackets.

One fear I have of putting the unit on casters is it would vibrate too much especially using the lathe. I have seen a design for casters that lift up and puts the units back onto the floor, I think you would need to do something like that.

I have two shopsmiths, one has a third/forth generations cabinet (originally from shopsmith plans) that was designed to mount below the shopsmith. I have since made a few more changes and taken the mounting ears off and have it just sit under the shopsmith. Photos at:

Shopsmith also sell as set of 3 cabinets that will set below the system (only two on systems with the lift). I'm sure you can find them in their catalog.

You can never have enough storage space... or at least I can't so I'm planning a new rolling cart for this coming summer/fall. Hope to be able to store some parts I presently have just sitting around.

Thanks for the response. I was thinking of the one with all the drawers but having the casters and removing the legs like on jcbrowns. I had already thought about having to build a method of lowering so it rested on the floor when in was use. I also have the lift assist and would have to allow for its clearance.

I move my Mark V quite a bit as my shop is very small, so a cabinet under it would not work well for me and yet I to needed a place to keep all of the various accessories used with the tool. I built the two small rolling cabinets and used some plastic organizers that I found at the local lumber store. The organizers pull out so I can see just what I need. Amazing how much SS odds and ends you accumulate when they are finally in one place.

That third picture seems to make a long stretch to reach the table, or does he stand on it use it?
I also noticed it bowing in the middle of the cart. Is that only when he has the planar stored under it? Does it affect the tension on the waybars?

chettrick - I'll butt in here cause I think ED (reible) is away from home. The 3rd photo is showing an arc on the backside of the shelf. Look again, it's not a sag. I've seen these photos before related to a thread on this Forum and I believe he has an answer regarding the front side. Now, we'll wait for Ed (3d) (reible) (the "Knight of Shopsmith")
