I am wanting to make a shop clock and would like to use the Shopsmith Logo as the face. I have downloaded the the icon from the forum but by the time it is enlarged it is way to grainy. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can find one with enough detail to enlarge to 8 to 12 inches?

Careful, you are treading on copyright violations by attempting to download/use a company logo.

Nice idea, but don't think it legal to do what you are trying to do...

If you search these forums on the word "wallpaper" a large shopsmith logo is contained in one of the articles. I don't know if shopsmith has a problem with its use but hopefully an admin will speak up. I wouldn't use it until I get a positive response from an admin though.

I believe "fair use" lets you make it for personal use, but if you want to sell them you need a license or something in writing.

I think you folks are forgetting something - the Shopsmith Logo is copyrighted and any use of it without written permission by Shopsmith is simply not legal whether for personal use or not. That applies to anything on their website.

The mere act of someone else creating a similar copy does not make it legal to use. In fact, that may itself be a copyright infringement. I doubt that "fair use" comes into play in this situation. By the way, based on Supreme Court proceedings, "fair use" is determined on a case by case basis, not through a general rule.

Please reread the "Proprietary Rights" section of the link in my original post. Nowhere does it give anyone permission to use their corporate logo.

IMHO you are skating on very thin ice relative to using any companies' private logo. Corporations vigorously defend their rights and usage of their logos.

IMHO you should write to SS and ask them if it is okay. The worst that will happen is they will say no. If you get permission, good. If you don't, oh well. It seems like wurlitzerwilly did not have any problem with SS; at least they did not offer any comments on the link that dusty gave you. That was definitely the place for SS to give us a big fat NO! Also, I read the post that drmcroberts gave you , and as far as I can tell, it does not say anything against using SS copyrighted stuff for personal use, but mostly talks about others than SS using them for advertising purposes or for gain. Just ask them, but not here; do it in writing.

I agree with your first statement, to ask SS if it is okay to use their logo.

The stated policy regarding their logo and trademarks is also VERY CLEARLY stated, as follows:

Proprietary Rights
The Shopsmith, Inc. logos and trademarks, as well as other marks, trade names, trademarks and logos on this Web site, are the properties of their respective owners. You may not use, reproduce, copy or manipulate such logos in any manner without the prior written consent of the owner.

The last sentence in that policy is very clear - IMHO. No mention is made as to whether the usage is for personal or commercial purposes.

I am not advocating anyone using SS copyrighted items without permission:eek: . I am simply stating that they are not specifying that they do not allow this same copyrighted stuff to be used for personal use. I am maintaining that if you ask first, IMHO, you may get permission. In a section above the one that drmcroberts is indicating is the following:

Perhaps this is why wurlitzerwilly et al have not had any problems using the SS emblem for their own use? I do not know. Asking first is safest.

I haven't read that page in a while and I'm not sure I like the idea of my posts becoming copyrighted by Shopsmith........ and besides I already have my photos copyrighted via the posting service I use... in effect I will not give shopsmith that right thus making it not in my interest to post here. Nor can I agree to those rules that are posted.

I'm going to reread this in the morning when I'm fresh. Others might want to notice that we should read this each time we come here as it can be updated, at any moment??? so maybe reading it just before and just after any posts should be in order???? And what do we do if we find we can not agree to the terms posted... even if the rules were different when we posted???

I'm not feeling good about this site nor any site that can and does change rule as it pleases with no effective dates. Nor do I care for lots of legal words that make this whole thing confusing... confusing for at least me.
