Thin, cheap-o bags on the DC don't cut it.....

I was getting ready to start working on my bookcase project. The bag on the dust collector needed to be dumped. The bag that was on it was getting pretty old so I tossed bag and all in the dumpster. I had 1 new SS brand bag left, so I thought I would give the Ruffies that we use for kitchen trash a shot. Size was right.....they are clear.... So, I got it mounted and powered up the DC. Looked good for about 2 minutes, then looked like a kid's balloon held too long on the helium tank. When she blew, fine dust went EVERYWHERE. The black dog was 10-12' away....looked like he had a bad case of dandruff.
At least I had enough sense to try it outside and had shut the garage doors to keep the stuff that fell out while changing the bag from blowing in. Wish I'd had a video running...was funny as h....!

Would contractor bags work? I have some, but they are black. Don't know that's a big deal, but wondered if anyone else has used something besides SS bags. New to the Shopsmith, just picked up a used 510 with a DC, among other things.

Being cheap bits me in the wallet all to frequently. I use only the Shopsmith bags. True they aren't cheap. Then again I keep hearing sad stories about virtually every other bag talked about. Interesting thought just hit me. Some talk about how lacking this dust collector can be. Man that had to take a bunch of force to bust that bag apart. Minimal tool? Not efficient? Lacking power? I don't think so. Jim

I have used the thick black contractor bags and they worked fine. I had to shorten them a little, and you just feel them to check how full they are.

I think ya NEED a 5mm bag if your going to use it on the DC.

I have used the 6 mil black contractor bags and they worked fine. I had to shorten them a little, and you just feel them to check how full they are.

I have used black trash bags, not sure how thick they were, but they worked.

So far so good.
Been in use for >6 mo.
The cinch string makes installation much less of a pita.
About half full.

Now that is interesting since they are less than two mil thick. I would have thought they would blow too. Perhaps the wrinkles work:D
