Possible Absence

I may be out of commission for a while. My computer is showing signs of thermal run away. It just locked up and the core temperature was 55°. Not good. The temperature has gone up nearly 3° since I logged on this time. Bye.

I recall back in the 1960's that we kept out computer room at about 62 degrees. If the room got up to 68 we had to shut down as the system could become unreliable.
My god I hated working in that. Always wore a suit jacket or sweater. We had to keep the humuggity up to prevent static charges that could zap things.
Somehow working in that computer room was worse than working in a 40 degree farm building.

You better believe it. If this thing goes into thermal runaway, I am apt to loose everything that is on it. All of the data files are backed up but the system software and applications are not 100% backed up. I have a lot of stuff on here that was downloaded. Many of those files are one of a kind.
I am running Windows 7 and that version has a library of pictures that is maintained on the "C" drive. That can be backed up but I normally do not. Periodically I purge the pictures and transfer those that I want to keep onto the data storage hard drive. All of the recent pictures that I have posted online are there.
As you can tell, I am running and the temperature has increased only 2° since I turned it on. Guess it was all that sawdust.

That's why I have subscribed to Dell's Data Safe backup service. For a small monthly fee I have X GBites of data storage on their server available for data backup. I have scheduled an automatic backup for Sunday evenings after 10:00 and as long as I'm connected to the internet all new files and photos are backup up. Of course that won't do me any good if I fry the motherboard:mad:

There's a utility you can download for Windoze,
SIW - System Information for Windows (Looks like the 'Home Edition'/freebie is now packaged with some bloat-ware called OpenCandy:mad: ...but they also say you can run SIW with the /nocandy switch...."SIW.exe /NOCANDY to turn the d@#$ed thing off) that will show internal sensors. I use their "Technician's Version" for work almost daily.

The worst part was you couldn't smoke in the computer room (wow, I can't believe I had that nasty habit).
