As the thread title states, what manuals do I need? I have found the online verison of an operations manual (MKVOperations.PDF), "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone online", and a parts diagram PDF. Is there a manual that describes how to go from one mode of operation to another, such as what parts to move around, what to fold, what to bend, button to push, or however it is you go from one mode to another? I do not know which model or what the serial number is of the ShopSmith I pick up Saturday, but I will know by then.

That all depends on what version of the Mark V you have as well as what accessories you have. Post a few pics and we will help you figure out what you need.

Where are you in Maryland (I'm in Montgomery County out by Laytonsville).

I do not know which model it is yet. I did post the only pictures I have right now in my Introduction thread. I pick the unit up saturday. I believe it was bought new in either the 60's or 70's. As far as I know the only additional piece is the bandsaw.

Welcome to the forum. It is always good to have another new member. Which ever model you end up with, there is someone here on the forum that has one like it. Many have been reconditioned and run like new. That is the beauty of the Shopsmith. Nearly all of them are still supported by Shopsmith.

Looking forward to hearing/seeing shat you have.

Whatever you have, do not change the spped control unless the main drive shaft is turning (either under power or by hand). Mounting a sanding disk and using it to turn the shaft is the easiest way.

Why? Because changing the speed control when the shaft is not turning can do serious damage to the speed control mechanism.

It looks like you have a model 500. So ideally, the previous owner will have a manual, a manual for the bandsaw and manuals/instruction sheets for any other accessories they have.

I am a pretty new owner of an '80s SS, so I have used the changing modes part of my owner manual several times recently. In my owners manual, Rev.6/88, there is a section that covers operations and its first sub section is changing modes. This covers the main 5 modes of operation.

The other part of the manual I need so often that I took it out of the 3-ring binder and hung on the wall is the speed chart. I reminds you what speed to use for an operation under different loads.

Not sure that will help much as I see a bandsaw setup sheet but no bandsaw manual.
