Planer Speed Setting

I Can't seem To Find Specific Speed Dial Settings For The Mark V Mounted Planer. Anny Suggestions?

It is not in the owners manual? Or perhaps you don't have one. I recently bought a used SS mounted planer also without an owners manual. Hmm, I guess I had better contact SS to order one. In the mean time, I would try a pretty high speed, at least in the jointer speed catagory, and use the feed speed at a low rate while sending through a test board of the same material that I want to use.

Planer speed and feed varies from P to T by the wood density (hard to soft), board width (1" to 12") and depth of cut (1/32" to 3/32"). The manual has an easy to read chart defining settings for all this. Since there is much more in the manual, I would suggest that it is an essential part of planer use and well worth whatever Shopsmith's price may be.
BTW - if you plan to run rough cut boards of uncertain ancestry, get a Wizard Metal Detector. Might save a few planer knives.
