My parents have a set of dining room chairs that have rollers on them. They are the typical office chair caster type wheels. They recently put down new hard wood flooring and don't like the chairs rolling anymore.

My idea was to take a thick dowell (2"?), glue a soft pad to the bottom so it will slide on the floor, but won't scratch it up, and drill a hole in the top to accept the same pin/peg that the casters use. I looked at the existing plastic casters and don't see any way to remove the pin without destroying the caster. We'll do that if necessary, but I don't really want to.

Where can I buy just that pin?

Just to make sure I'm clear, I'm talking about the metal pin sticking up above the wheel in this picture:

Personally I would remove the pin from the bottom of the leg and replace it with a dowel. I have used a flat blade screwdriver between the leg and the wheel and tapped downward, the wheel assembly and the pin you mention generally pop out easily. Jim

Well, they want to totally get rid of the wheels.

In my searching I did find this, that might work. But it takes away the fun of making something!

I'll give that a try next time I'm out at my parents'.

They look like they are made of some sort of plastic. Just hit them with a hammer or clamp them in a vise and then repurpose the stems.

Seriously, I have seen stems somewhere in my wanderings and I have not quit looking.
