Progress on my Mark V

After reducing many Scotch Brite pads to tiny green threads, and many sheets of 600 and 2000 grit sandpaper to dust, I have made progress on cleaning my Mark V and have some before and after photos.
Starting with the before of the headstock, which was packed with dust and a good bit of surface corrosion once the dust was removed.
All cleaned and polished, and looks like all the bearings and parts that should rotate are good. Also the belts seem to be ok too.
These two pieces I had to beat apart with a rubber mallet and then scrape crud out and polish quite a bit of corrosion.

I am still trying to clean all of the dirt off the outside, but did get some of it.
Big difference here on the work table.
Before:
After a couple of applications of Naval Jelly, scotch brite, 600 grit, and 2000 grit sandpaper:
The work table is now nice and smooth except for the pitted area. Anything I can do about that?
Also I have scrubbed and polished the way tubes and support tubes. I also polished all the areas in the headstock case and work table carriage that slide on the way tubes.

Wow, that unit sure lead a rough life. But you have done a great job of bring it back to good health. Now for the fun part, putting it all back together

As soon as I get a new power cord, it will go back together. Luckily everything was just surface corrosion and nothing other than the work table is pitted.

I know it is weird, but I think it is really cool to see one of these old machines that look like they are on the brink of being junked be brought back to life. I think it is a testament to the quality of SS that some many Mark V's are abused by their owners and somehow keep on running. And while I bought my machine in an almost new unused condition, I know when I buy my next one it will probably need a lot of work and watching these reconstruction projects is a plethora of information and experience that is priceless. Looks nice, looking forward to the completed pics....
