I was on here, briefly, before I got hired to go overseas for some work. I managed to forget my screen name and password, so I re-registered. I'm now starting to get back to my garage which brings me back here! Things are hectic and I'm excited to get my projects rolling along. I'm looking forward to learning new tricks and getting hot new ideas from the people here. I'm also starting a website for prefab furniture. I'm happy to hear what you think.

Initial offering, what do you guys think of this for a project? Image

Am I the only one who thinks wood is a bad idea to use in an engine? http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/8723/10002/-1

Is it hickory? I live the smell of hickory smoke.

Good point, hickory smoke is great, but where there is smoke, there is fire and I would rather avoid a fire in my engine bay (1972 Dodge Charger). I know spacers are supposed to help airflow, but WHY wood? whats wrong with aluminum?

Aluminum conducts heat, so as more and more of your horsepower ends up as heat the more you need to insulate the carb from that heat. Boiling carbs are not that great an idea.

Personally not a big fan of the contemporary design in your first link. It is clever, just not something SWMBO would allow in the house. She's the designer, I'm the builder.

Is it standard wood used for that spacer or is it a composite using wood particle as one of its components? The Jegs add really does not specify (it just says wood). I can see a composite of some type with a fire retardant for this application to shield the carb from excess heat. Of course you don't want the wood composite directly against the intake (which I think that is what that black piece is for). Believe it or not, a lot of your standard paper/card board type gaskets have wood pulp in them.
