Not a true Shopsmith but Chuck help needed!

I need help getting squared away so I can start practicing! My questions are what do I need to order so I can stick a piece of wood on this and start "making sawdust"? At the headstock it only has the stub of metal with no chuck or anything on it and the tailstock has no center at all.

Best I can get for little to nothing money.... I hate to say that since I like to buy the best of the best when I can but I am restoring a 72 Chevelle so squeezing money out of my wife makes me cringe as it is! :D

Thanks in advance guys!

Would this "type" of chuck fit on the SS?

The shaft on the Shopsmith is tapered and is 5/8" in diameter. The chuck is secured to the shaft with a setscrew.

That setscrew is set at a slight angle so that it mates with the taper on the drive shaft at a 90° angle.

It will be hard to find an exact fit in the general market. Shopsmith is your best bet and behind that I would suggest ebay.

Well that clears the chuck up! Thanks guys.

What about the centers? One goes into the chuck the other a #1 in the tailstock?

No.
The tailstock has a #2 Morse taper. Any wood lathe tail center so equipped will work. Also I strongly suggest a "live" center with a bearing that will let it rotate with the turning.

Bill what about on the chuck side? What kills me is I don't know the terminology! I sure can fix any part of a car but this is like a new art thats hidden!

Ding ding ding...

That is the truck backing up.

What operations are you trying to do?

The prime use of a drill chuck is to drill. One way or the other you will need one of those chucks at some point.

If on the other hand you have been planning to use the lathe then the drill chuck will be of very limited use as a drive center. If you are just doing pens you might get by but it will not work for larger operations.

If you have not done so yet please take advantage of the online resources or your own copy of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone. Online version is at:

http://www.shopsmith.com/academy/welcome.htm

And read the section on lathe turning.

You then might take a look at the online catalog for the parts you want, or take your chances on ebay.

BTW good luck with your car restore.

Just wanted to post some pics to be on the safe side.

So I guess I am missing something so glad for the backup! The centers I see are all tapered with a shaft and then the "head" if you will that goes into the wood. So how do these to shafts mate?
