This was made from a free plan downloaded from finewoodworking.com. It calls for 3/4" cedar so instead of having to re-saw a large cedar post I have or buy some more expensive lumber I used a couple of 5/8" cedar fence boards. They are fairly cheap at the big box stores. I jointed and planed the boards down to 1/2" and did a little recalculating on the plans to allow for the difference in thickness. The original plan had MAIL across the front so I changed it to my last name instead. I used a little (free) program called scroll saw patterns for the name and the scroll work patterns came with the plans. There is a piece of lexan plastic behind the lettering so you can tell if there is any mail before opening the box. The finish is just a couple of coats of wipe on poly to seal it and a last coat of good ole Johnson's paste wax. Material wise the box only cost around $5 (I already had a piece of the hinge laying around) and, of course, that's not counting the hundreds invested in the tools it took to make it. But, then, I did have hundreds of dollars worth of fun doing this little project.[ATTACH]18403[/ATTACH]

Nice! 'Western' cedar for sure.

It is nice that you took a side picture, it gave me a chance to notice that the sides of the mailbox are made in one piece including the nice detail at the bottom of it.
Very nice work, I wish I had a postman delivering to my door and enjoying a nice mailbox like that.
