Rule # 1 for shopsmith newb. Don't adjust speed setting unless unit is turning?

When looking at a used unit and totally new to ShopSmith, how can one tell if PO has done this?

If damage has been done by changing the speed control without having the shaft in motion, the speed control will be stiff (hard to turn). If you can use the speed control handle and with the unit running, change the speed up and down the entire speed range, there is nothing to worry about.

I'd post a couple pictures of damaged speed controls but I must cut this short for a doctor's appointment. If no one else does, I'll post pictures later.
