Hub Protection For Your Headstock Belt Cover

I happened to get one of the new PowerPro DIY kits and ended up sending it back to Shopsmith for repair. Shopsmith had it purring like a cat. Unfortunately, after the shipped delivered it & I installed it, my headstock & Shopmith started vibrating across the wooden subfloor- with the casters up.

The problem it turned up was the idler shaft was knocked into the headstock to where the inner bearing was almost completely out of the eccentric. This cause the belts to be at a 20-30 degree angle instead of being perpendicular to the shafts. The problem was a product of the shipping process. Don't ask me how it is possible to drive a idler shaft in to where the inner bearing on a new-style idler shaft is ready to pop out of the eccentric, but Fed Ex did it!

So I sent it back to Shopsmith. In the meantime I bought another 520 on April 30th in Maryland. This 520 came with a hub protector! This hub protector mounts on the left side of the headstock on the belt cover with two screws over the shafts/hubs assys. You can either make your own special belt cover by drilling a couple of holes and epoxying nuts in place or you can order the Canadian belt cover which to my knowledge comes with the hub protector and the no drilling is required. This, I believe is the reason the Canadian belt cover costs $51.67 while the US version costs only $42.90.

I requested Shopsmith simply tape it to the side of the belt cover and when I received my headstock back- it was perfect! I then removed the belt cover, marked the screw locations, used a pin punch, drilled two holes and used epoxy to secure the nuts in place forever. I unpacked my headstock and everything was perfect. Since I put the hub cover on, I no longer touch the spinning hubs.

If you want to do it yourself the hub protector costs around $9 and comes with hardware. You'll need the quill twister or something to twist the quill spindle. The hub protector will protect against long hair from getting caught up around the hubs or getting your fingers surprised. Good luck,

I drilled and taped the holes for the hub cover, the idea of a nut coming lose in the headstock scared me too much.

I have been very happy with it, I also purchased the twister and an extra coupler. For now they are screwed together until someday when my 30 year old couple breaks.
