I have a rubber ring on the tube. Is this normal or should it be somewhere else?

It is suppose to be there. It serves to reduce the chance of the headstock slamming into the carriage with enough force to break either one.

More importantly it is a spacer. By sliding the headstock and carriage together against this spacer, the blade (with the quill fully retracted) should be in the center of the table insert.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if it belonged inside the headstock.

I had the exact same reaction when I started looking at buying a used Shopsmith. . .

If they had put one on each tube you probably would have thought it natural.
