Hi everyone, I'm new to the SS world just picked up a 1982 machine for a great price. I used it very little in the last 2 weeks since I got it. The problem with it is that the motor clutch keeps lining up with the opposite splines and not meshing together.see atttached pic. [ATTACH]18770[/ATTACH] hope i did the pic right.

I think you are about to perform a dismantling of the idler sheaves assembly. There is a keeper in there that should prevent that.

Fear not. Every Shopsmith owner should know how to do this. It is not hard, just a bit time consuming.

A couple pictures to follow.

Your photo is of the motor sheave assembly. I am buffaloed by the brass shaft

When you view the attached you will see there is supposed to be a long key that will keep the sheaves from touching like they do now. Here is the link to the Mark V exploded diagram. Page down to find the exploded headstock. Look at parts 114 thru 124. After disassembly, look for the spacer sheave (#124)

As I remember, there are no brass parts in this assembly.

Caution: before you remove the retaining ring, make a board with a hole large enough to fit over the motor shaft, but small enough to hold the spring from shooting out and causing damage to legs, hands, or parts of a shop wall. This board is also necessary to re-assemble the spring and retaining ring.

The brass shaft also through me off.

thanks for the info on the floating sheave. do you know what size hole i need to drill in the wood? the brass you see is just an optical illusion with the lighting and the flash. thanks again

This PDF will tell ya how to remove/replace the spring.

I would be looking for a missing shaft key (part 120 in this diagram).

Is it possible that the set screw that holds the fan sheave and the key in place has come loose, allowing the sheaves to become mis-aligned?

I hope it's the set screw came loose. I'll look at tearing into it this weekend. I'm going to drywall and insulate the new work shop this weekend, most of the electrical is in except the service.
