Hi All,

As a new owner of a Shopsmith 510 here in the UK I wonder if you could help with some information. Does anyone know what size and type of thread is on the almost universal grub screw/set screw which takes the 5/32 Allan key. I can see me loosing one or two of these over the months and I thought it may be wise to lay in a small stock. I would contact SS direct but I understand they will not supply direct to UK customers (off the UK Shopsmith forum)

They appear to be SAE 5/16 x18 in varying lengths for different places.

Here in the USA, they are readily available at any hardware store. I don't know if you can buy SAE in the UK.

Do you have a friend in the States that could send you a "Help Kit" from SS

The ends vary as well. Cup, Serrated cup, point, flat, domed(?), half dog.

The half dog is used as a anti-rotation screw that the 'dog' rides in a keyway on the 'top' of the quill.

The cup(plain or serrated) is used where disassembly is either infrequent or coming loose is undesirable.

The flat or domed(?) set screws are used to attach implements to the quill.

All should be of a length to extend almost to the outside or barely proud when tightened.

All should have a hex 5/32" socket with NO head.

And yes there are a few of different sizes, but they usually are not 'set' screws.

Thanks for the replies, not as simple as I thought. I don't know if I can get SAE threaded screws in the UK, I'll research, I've seen UNC, BSF and Whitworth.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone in the States who I can ask to get me a Helpkit, are there any independent re-sellers of Shopsmiths in the States or is all direct from Shopsmith Inc?

If all you need are the set screws in SAE thread, you probably can order them from McMaster-Carr. I'm pretty sure they ship to Europe. Here is their web sites:

Dusty thanks for posting. I have a Groupon for a local hardware store and this looks like a good way to spend a few bucks picking up some screws.
