The power switch has power on indication. When off, no light.
When running forward, a green light 'lights'.
When running in reverse, an amber light 'lights'.
The pilot lamp is an 'S6' bulb. I found thisun at HD, 2/$2.??.
Wiring side of switch.
Line cord wires attach to lower 'L1'(black) and 'L2'(white) terminals.

For A.O.Smith motor wires connect as follows: (507231)

Black 'L1' (upper)
White 'L2' (upper)

Red 'T5'
Red Tracer 'T9'

Yellow '5' The two '5' switch terminals are jumpered.
Black tracer '2' from capacitor
Black tracer from motor to other capacitor terminal


For General Electric motor wires connect as follows: (507232)

Line cord wires as described above to lower L1,L2.

Blue 'L1'
White 'L2'

Red 'T5'
Black 'T9'

Purple '5' The two '5' terminals are jumpered.
Orange '2'

two brown wires(one to each capacitor terminal).

For A.O.Smith motor with an external start relay (501210)

Line cord wires as described above to L1/L2.

Black 'L1'
Whjite 'L2'

Red 'T5'
Red tracer 'T9'
Yellow relay(5) and both '5' switch terminals
Jumper from switch '2' to relay(2)

Black tracer from motor to one capacitor terminal
Black tracer from other capacitor terminal to relay(1)

Don't own a Mark VII and probably never will, but it is interesting to read about the differences between the Mark VII and the Mark 5/V. It does seem like the Mark VII was decades ahead of its time with double tilt, reversible motor, built in dust collection but also flawed (plastic speed cam, plastic racks on tubes).

I have 4 Mark VII's.

2 of them have issues in that they don't spin in reverse, they humm and then blow breaker.

I sprayed contact cleaner in the tiny gap between the metal arms of the buttons and the innards and sometimes the motor will turn backwards.

The housing looks like pressed together molded plastic.

Has anything opened the plastic housing and rebuilt switch? If so, what is the best way to do this??

Working from memory here, but I have had one apart. IIRC it is held together with screws and nuts. The screws were in the back corner. I do not recall if anything else needed to be removed to get it apart

I bought this style switch from Battle's Hardware in Whittier, CA. ShopSmith actually referred me to Battles for a replacement switch. Apparently, Battles misplaced the wiring diagram that goes with the switch. I'm hoping one of you bought the same switch and can send me a copy of the wiring diagram. I have the GE motor.

Do you have a R13-44-E-01?

Does the GE motor have the external start relay?

The number on the switch is not that specific. It is supposed to be an on, off, reverse toggle. How would I be able to tell if the motor has the external start relay? Initially I thought the Mare VIIs only came with 2 motor possibilities, the GE and one that slips my mind.

The start relay is mounted on the case of the motor.

GE, A.O.Smith, A.O.Smith with relay.

What are the wire colors coming out of the motor and number of each color?

Assuming the switch has three detented(not spring return) positions it is likely an "E".

A word of 'caution' - The motor MUST be allowed to coast down if running in one direction, and you need to reverse it. The switch only alters the start circuit. If you reverse it with the motor running, it will continue to run in the original direction.

Never mind, you said GE Motor.

So verify the wires are:
Brown (2)
Orange
Purple
Black
Red
Blue
White

This is what I'm working with. The previous switch was a forward only.
