I was looking at the strip sander on the SS website that is currently on sale and noticed is mentions it has "Interchangeable Flat and Curved Platens" and shows a photo of them...what are these and how are they used?

The platens are used to back up and support the sanding belt as you press the work into it. There are at least four that I am aware of 1/2" flat, 1" flat, 1" curved and the 1" special for the chisel sharpening attachment.

Are they inserted vertically behind the belt? I'm trying to visualize how you use them...

Yes the mount behind the belt. Except for the curved platen which only attaches at the bottom, they all attach to the frame at the top and the bottom of the platen.

Okay - I get it...they are basically the same thing as the flat metal plate that sits behind the belt on a belt sander (?)
